The Educational and Museum Center "Świętokrzyski Sztetl" in Chmielnik is a unique place that brings the history and culture of the Jewish community in the Świętokrzyskie region to life. It is located in a renovated 18th-century synagogue, about 35 kilometers from the Bristol Hotel in Busko-Zdrój, making it an excellent destination for a day trip for our guests.
History of the Synagogue The synagogue in Chmielnik was built around 1750 and was situated in the center of the former Jewish district, about 300 meters north of the market square. Nearby were two kahal schools, a Talmudic house, and the rabbi's residence. During World War II, the interior of the synagogue was devastated by the German occupiers and turned into a storage facility. After the war, the building continued to function as a warehouse, which contributed to its deterioration.
Renovation and Modern Times In 2008, a decision was made to renovate the synagogue and transform it into the "Świętokrzyski Sztetl" Educational and Museum Center. The project, designed by Nizio Design International, is based on two forms: the first symbolizes "light" – the shared life of Poles and Jews before the war, while the second represents "shadow" – the period of the Holocaust. The central feature of the interior is the world’s only glass bima, a reconstruction of an 18th-century pulpit from which the Torah was read.
Interesting Facts Before World War II, Jews made up about 80% of Chmielnik's population, highlighting the city’s rich Jewish tradition. The center organizes the annual "Szalom na Wspólnej" event, which celebrates Jewish culture through concerts, workshops, and Jewish cuisine tastings. In 2024, the center celebrated its tenth anniversary, emphasizing the importance of intercultural dialogue and historical memory.
Practical Information The center is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (until 4:00 PM during the winter season). Entrance tickets cost 15 PLN (regular) and 10 PLN (discounted). Families can purchase a ticket for 30 PLN. For additional information, please call +48 734 158 969.
We invite our guests to visit the "Świętokrzyski Sztetl" and immerse themselves in the fascinating history and culture of the Jewish community in the region.
