The "Pine on Stilts" is a unique natural monument located in the village of Wełecz, just 5 km from the center of Busko-Zdrój. This extraordinary specimen of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is characterized by its completely exposed root system, which lifts the tree trunk approximately 3–4 meters above the ground, giving the appearance that the tree is standing on stilts.
The unusual appearance of the pine is the result of human activity. In the past, the inhabitants of Wełecz extracted sand for construction purposes in this area, which led to the lowering of the ground level and the exposure of the tree's roots. Over time, these roots became covered in bark and began to function as trunks, giving the tree its distinctive look.
Since October 10, 2002, the Pine on Stilts has been officially recognized as a natural monument, highlighting its exceptional natural and cultural value. It is also worth noting that this tree grows in a historically significant location. During World War II, the Nazis carried out the execution of over 200 Polish people in the nearby forest, commemorated by a monument at the site.
For guests of the Bristol Hotel in Busko-Zdrój, a visit to the Pine on Stilts can be an interesting tourist attraction. Getting to Wełecz is straightforward; one should follow Provincial Road No. 767 toward Pińczów. The turnoff to the pine is on the right side, near the Moya gas station. After turning, it’s just about a 300-meter drive on an unpaved road to reach a small parking lot, from which only 30 meters remain to this remarkable tree.
When visiting the Pine on Stilts, it's important to remember its delicate ecosystem and exercise caution to avoid damaging the exposed roots. This site combines unique natural features with significant historical context, making it a valuable point on the map of attractions in the Busko-Zdrój region.
